From red to gray: aging populations in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet UFont

Countries in East Europe and the former Soviet Union will face a demographic transformation of “enormous magnitude”, with falling birth rates and the ‘greying of the population’, speakers told a joint EPC-World Bank Policy Dialogue.

The World Bank’s remedy is to help countries introduce major reforms to increase productivity and life-long learning, while the EU’s approach, through its Lisbon Strategy, is to increase the working population, which will help pay for care for the elderly and pensions.
